Match Report

After a gruelling season in National League, Boots Ladies 1’s were ready to make their comeback. We welcomed some new faces to the squad; Naomi James, Sarah Pask and Megan Beard and admired our new pitch complete with perfectly straight side lines. The team were ready and eager to take those first 3 points, except for Megan who decided to stay in bed.

Boots had good possession and strong attacking play from the start. The first shot came from Becky Wright but it pinged off the post. Despite us entering the circle many times, it was only when we made some short sharp passes that we finally got the ball in the back of the net. Laura Duffin was the first to get her name on the score sheet, followed by Sophie Aspinall. Becky Wright then scored arguably the best goal of the day just before half time by speeding past the last defender, rounding the keeper like she didn’t exist and neatly slotting the ball in.

Jelly babies and Haribo fuelled us to score several more goals in the second half. Laura Mason’s goal made it 4-0 and she excitedly celebrated her debut goal for the first team. After a nasty tackle Karen Stevenson was out of the game with a painful cut to her chin. Boots lost focus (and a defender!) following Karen’s injury and North Staffs took their chance and made it 4-1. Boots then continued to put pressure on North Staffs defenders and scored again, Tammy with a very well taken one on one with the keeper. The last goal just like Megan came late on with the North Staffs defending just like Megan’s timekeeping….Poor. So a great start to the season with blood, sweat and tears to get the three points.

Man of the match: Becky Wright
