On a rather sunny day in Derbyshire, Boots 2s faced their first league game of the season against Matlock Baileans 2s. Matlock finished 2nd in the league last year on the same number of points as promoted Beeston but finishing runners up due to goal difference. Not the nicest start to the season, but a game that Amo was looking forward to testing his players in early doors.

A couple of notable things happened pre getting to the pitch.

1-      Aussie talks too much to her passengers, and drove past the turning for the pitch 4 times.

2-      Dani got lost

3-      Kim forgot her skirt. Went to decathlon en route to buy a new skirt. Kim also forgot her shoes but didn’t realise until in the changing room. Boyfriend Jonty bought new shoes en route.

Next up was the small matter of the game. In their new (but well-practiced) formation, Boots looked by far the better team for the majority of the first half. The goal came about 20 mins in, from the second short corner of the match. There was some good reaction from Dawn at the top of the D to fast defensive work, and Shooter was able to tap it in somewhere near the post. Boots always looked likely to score more goals, and were perhaps a bit frustrated to only be 1-0 up at the interval. With temperatures soaring the second half was scrappy but Matlock didn’t look like creating any chances of their own and instead seemed reliant upon cheap turnovers from lazy Boots play. Ultimately it finished 1-0, and Boots will be very very happy to have got 3 points from a team that is (was!) the thorn in Amo’s side.

There were some great spells of Boots possession, and that will be the focus for next week’s game vs Belper 2s. Belper lost 6-0 to Barton in their first league game, and so Boots will be aiming to keep all the good stuff from this week and grab another 3 points!

High/Lowlight

·         High - Scoring from a short corner –wooop!

·         Low – Aus forgetting what number she was at a subsequent short corner, resulting in a ball sailing past her at top D to the millions of attackers at the half way line (I guess we were just testing the defenders out….)
